About me
I was born in
Guadalajara, Jalisco,
Mexico
and moved to East Los Angeles,
California in 1983.
I went to high school at Garfield High School--a very well known high school which was the subject of
the movie Stand and Deliver (and I was taught by Jaime Escalante). I then attended Wellesley College and
graduated with bachelor degrees in Math and Economics in May 1997.
My family now lives in La Mirada, CA. But since
I spent all my summers during undergrad doing research, I haven't been able
to spend much time there. But that's okay because I've had some memorable
summers--the best
was the summer of 1996. I was in Cornell University's
Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute (MTBI), co-sponsored by SACNAS and it's where
I met my husband, Stephen Wirkus. We had our first child recently and I spend a lot of time with him.
The rest of my days are spent doing school/research work
but I enjoy dancing and listening to music when I
have free time.
I am working with Richard Rand on biological applications of nonlinear dynamics. We have
worked on modeling the defense mechanism by which the bombardier beetle ejected
its hot fluid. We are
currently investigating the dynamics of the development growth of eyes
by examining the effect that varying periods of light and
darkness has on the cornea of developing chicks.
