Graduate School Application

Complete the application online at apply.gradschool.cornell.edu. The secure form is easy to use and your application is received immediately upon submission. The Cornell Graduate School maintains extensive information for prospective applicants. Students can learn more about the application process and review additional Graduate School application guidelines. Students can also locate additional information on fellowships, financial aid, student services, etc.

Supplementary materials, including letters of recommendation, college transcripts and test scores, should be sent directly to the Center at the address below. (Please DO NOT mail any accompanying materials to the Cornell Graduate School in Caldwell Hall as it may delay your application.)

Transcripts

Official transcripts from each college or university you have attended are required. Please mail directly to Center for Applied Mathematics (address listed above).

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required. Electronic recommendation requests are available when submitting the online applications. (These requests are not send to the recommenders until the online application has been submitted). Forms available for printing and mailing are also available at the application web site. Printed forms should be mailed directly to the Center for Applied Mathematics (address above).

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores

GRE test scores for the general test are required. The subject test in Mathematics if strongly recommended, but not required. Score reporting codes are as follows: University Code 2098, Department Code 0702. We will initially accept copies of your score report, however, official verification from the testing service must be reported, and admission cannot be finalized until received.

TOEFL

All applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); a minimum score of 213 computer based (or 550 paper based) is required for admission. TOEFL is not required of applicants who have studied full-time for two or more years in a college or university where English is the language of instruction and the college or university is located in a country where English is the native language. Score reporting codes are as follows: University Code 2098, Department Code 54. We will initially accept copies of your score report; however, official verification from the testing service must be reported, and admission cannot be finalized until received. TOEFL scores are good for two years.

Financial Aid

A number of fellowships, as well as teaching and research assistantships, are awarded each year to entering and continuing students. Stipends vary, but all awards cover full tuition, student health insurance and ordinary living expenses. There is no separate application for fellowships or assistantships. The Center for Applied Mathematics usually admits only students for whom financial support can be assured.

Prospective graduate students are urged to apply for support from national, international, industry, foundation and government sources. Deadlines are typically in the fall or early winter. For example U.S. citizen and permanent residents are encouraged to apply for National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships (www.fastlane.nsf.gov) and Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellowships (http://www.hertzfndn.org/). The National Physical Consortium (NPSC) has fellowships available to female applicants and applicants from underrepresented minority groups who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents (www.npsc.org).

These fellowships include a tuition payment and stipend. Cornell students who hold these fellowships will receive health insurance and a supplement to cover any tuition shortfall.

To receive full consideration for financial aid, applications should be submitted by January 15.
