Activities in the Applied Math department

CAM students take part in lots of activities other than just thesis work. Consider some of these:

  • Conferences
  • Colloquia and seminars
  • Cornell-run clubs/activities
  • Community
  • Fun - Pictures: Fall 05 Picnic; Other Picnic Pictures

  • Conferences

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) holds several workshops and courses throughout the year, focusing on applied and computational mathematics. These have been great opportunities to present research in scientific computing and to network with researchers at universities, government labs, and industries. People attend SIAM conferences from all over the world. There are lots of parallel sessions, so sometimes it's difficult choosing only one talk to go to at any given time! These conferences normally feature short courses given by experts in the field before the start of the conference. Carla Martin and Mike Singer spoke at the SIAM CS&E conference this Feb 11-15 in Orlando.
    See http://www.siam.org/meetings/ for more details.

Carla Martin is also speaking at the Householder Symposium this May. The Householder Symposium is held every 3 years and attracts top researchers from all over the world in Linear Algebra. This May it will be held in Seven Springs, PA.

Virginia Pasour will be going to the Society for Mathematical Biology annual meeting in Dresden this summer. She has also attended several other conference over the past year: American Society for Limnology and Oceanography in Hawaii last February and International Association for Great Lakes Research in May.

RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) has had Applied Math Days for the past four years now. The conference is normally held in the fall. Grad students and postdocs from about five schools in the NE give talks on their research. Usually there is at least one faculty member who gives a plenary talk. Joe Tien and Mike Singer have recently attended this conference.

Johnny Guzman, Jaime Barrera and Varis Carey all attend the Finite Element Circus every semester. This is a one and a half day conference on Finite Element methods (which are methods that numerically approximate PDE's). Johnny and Jaime both also attended the International Meshing Roundtable Conference when it was in Ithaca two years ago.

Michael Robinson recently attended the IEEE Antennas and Propagation International Symposium (Monterey, CA) and gave a talk "Polarizing Frequency of a Fluid Plasma Antenna Element."

Liang Chen recently attended the September Credit Risk Conference at Princeton, and the October INFORMS at Denver.

Paul Hurtado attended a summer school at McGill University "Systems Biology Dynamics: From Genes to Organisms" for two weeks in Summer 2004.

We will also have information about applying for funding for conferences... but while it's not written yet, please see the site from the Math department http://www.math.cornell.edu/Graduate/Funds/travel.html.

    Colloquia and seminars

In CAM, we have three regular seminar series.

CAM colloquium has faculty speakers and is for everyone.

Bill Sears has faculty speakers and is focussed on interests of the first year students. This way, the first year students meet a broad range of faculty and it might help them find an advisor.

Math Sciences has grad students speaking about their research and is for everyone.

    Cornell-run clubs/activities

CAM students participate in many Cornell-run clubs and activities. To learn more about any of these clubs, feel free to contact the corresponding students.
