News from CAM Alumni - 2005-061/06 Dawn Chamerlain, M.S. 2000, writes: Hi Dolores! How are things going at CAM? I'm doing pretty well - I got married about 2.5 years ago, and we're still living in California. I just started work at Google about a month ago, we and got a visit from Dan Jenkins (Assoc. Dir. in CIS at Cornell) yesterday, and that got me wondering if there are any CAM students thinking about going into industry that might be interested in coming to Google. I know there was a problem when I was at Cornell with some of the professors having limited contacts in industry because they had been in academia their whole careers. So I thought I'd at least give you my updated contact information, and let you know that I'm happy to talk to anyone who might be interested in learning more about industry, and Google in particular (I worked for a company called Advertising.com for a while, too, and they have a lot of PhDs from things Operations Research doing statiscal modeling and control theory, so I can talk a little more broadly about industry jobs) My contact info is: 1/06 - Katharyn Boyle, Ph.D. 2005, writes: "After a long process of rotating around all the desks at Citigroup, the members of my class along with myself have been permanently placed. To my excitement, I will be trading emerging market credit derivatives. Emerging markets offers me the unique opportunity to be exposed to a large majority of the credit products in the fixed income world. Also, I am very excited to have the challenge of keeping up to date on the macroeconomic drivers of the latin american, eastern european, and asian regions. The move to NYC has been fantastic. Danger and I are happily adjusting to the hustle and bustle of city life." 11/05 - Tara Small, Ph.D. 2005 writes: Hi Dolores and everyone, I have now been a postdoc at the University of Toronto in Electrical and Computer Engineering for about 3 months, but I still think about Ithaca quite a bit. One of my current supervisors also attended Cornell for grad school and was so pleased when he saw the Watkin's Glen Central Cascade as the Desktop on my computer. :) Overall, Toronto is a lot of fun and there are tons of things to do. If any of you would like to come to visit, you are welcome to stay with me! Take care,

Time flies, I have been working in the City for more than a year, and I miss everyone in CAM. Currently, I am a Quantative Researcher in J.P.Morgan. My responsibilities include developing interest rate models, releasing analytics for exotic option pricing, analyzing time profit and loss, and supporting traders on various requests. I spend a lot of time on reading the codes and the documents on the existing models. Given the requests from the business side, I also did modifications or improvements on the code. Similar to my PhD life, debugging is one of the most important tasks. I am working on the trading floor. There are about four hundred people working together. Clocks of different time zones are hanging on the wall. Everyone is sitting in front of two or more computer screens. Sometimes traders are yelling when the good or bad news come. The space for each person is so limited. I really miss the desk I had in CAM. It was triple of the size that I have now and had a beautiful view over the campus. the math department of the University of Minnesota. Everilis is a
math professor at North Hennepin Community College. We both enjoy
our work tremendously. The professor that I am working with is very
supportive. I think this was the best match for me. At the same time,
I miss talking to Prof. Wahlbin and Prof. Schatz. I am sure I will
see them at a conference soon. 11/05- Suzanne Shontz, Ph.D. 2005 writes: Hi CAMsters! Life in the Twin Cities has been great. I've been playing volleyball
and am active in my church and another Christian organization. It's Keep in touch, and let me know if you're ever in Minneapolis for a conference at the IMA! Suzanne 2/05- Letter from Gahl Berkooz,
Ph.D. 1991: 3/05 - Javier Pena, Ph.D. 1998, visited and gave a talk in the CAM Colloquium. 7/05- Good News from Prashant Mehta, Ph.D. 2004: Dear Dolores, I wanted to let you know that I have just accepted
an offer from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University
of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus for a tenure-track assistant
professor position in the area of Dynamics and Control. I will begin
immediately (fall 2005). Illinois has been interviewing for this position
since 2001 and I feel very lucky and honored to have gotten this job.
10/05 - From Dave Hiebeler, Ph.D. 2001: I'm still working toward tenure in the Dept of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maine. I've got 1 Master's student and 3 undergrads working on my research with me this Fall, and am really enjoying having my own "lab group" to interact with! Two of my students attended Carlos Castillo-Chavez's MTBI at Los Alamos this past summer, which was fantastic for them (and now I benefit from their experiences too). Also, I've travelled to China 3 times since last summer, partly to relax, and also to collaborate with entomologists there to apply my spatial models to their field data. -dave h. |
