News from CAM Alumni - Summer 2000

Patrick Worfolk (PhD. 1993) writes: I hope all is well with you and CAM. It looks like you are still located in the theory center. I can't believe I graduated 7 years ago now. Time has really flown. I held a number of academic postdoc positions and then ended up in CA doing mathematical consulting work. Last year I joined a high-tech start-up I had been consulting with almost fulltime. It is very exciting and challenging work that I am enjoying. I am trying to hire someone with Applied Math/OR background and am hoping I might be able to attract some job candidates from Cornell! I have included a job announcement below. Can you post it at CAM and circulate it to anyone who might be interested? You can direct people to me for more information - my contact info is below. (Contract Dolores Pendell (dap7@cornell.edu) for job announcement.)

On the personal front: I don't know if you know we know have a son, Rephael, who is 16 mos. Our daugther Hana is now 4. Traveling with the two is hard, but we often talk about visiting Ithaca. All the best . (Gahl - Have you changed the spelling of your name?)

Javier Pena (Ph.D. 1998): Nice to hear from you. Life has treated me well. Lots of work but I am getting the hang of it. Dolores, I may go to Ithaca sometime in August. I let you know exactly when. I would love to stop by and say hello. By the way, please make this small correction on my current address: Graduate School of Industrial Administration, Carnegie Mellon University, 5000 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Warm regards, Javier

Stephen Ellner (Ph.D. 1982): I am about to make the transition from "alumnus" to "faculty". My web page will be reachable from www.eeb.cornell.edu (it doesn't exist yet). So... see you in the Fall! Steve

Louis Gross (Ph.D. 1979): Hope all is well with you - the Center certainly seems to be thriving under your leadership! Noted one change on my alumni listing - our area code is changed so my phone is 865-974-4295. Hopefully I'll get up there for a visit sometime. Best regards, Lou Gross

Jesus DeLoera (Ph.D. 1995): Hi Dolores!! how are you? it is good to hear from you. Ingrid and I are fine. Here is my data. Assistant Professor, University of California Davis 2 children: Andres(2) and Antonio (born in Ithaca, 5 yrs old now). email deloera@math.ucdavis.edu my web page: http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/~deloera/ all the best Jesus

Gunduz Caginalap (Ph.D. 1971): My address is still the same (Math Dept, Pitt) and the best email is caginalp@pitt.edu. My phone is 412 624 8339. I am also doing mathematical economics and finance now. I work with some people at Univ of Arizona and visit them regularly as the Dreman Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Best regards, Gunduz Caginalp

T.V. Raman (Ph.D. 1994): Dolores --Good to hear from you. Don't know if I updated you when I moved from Adobe to IBM Research last year --I now work on speech interaction at IBM Research --officially at Watson in Yorktown Heights --but physically here in CA. On other CAM alumni news --Aster passed away at the end of last year --she was almost 13 years old. I now have a young yellow Lab --visit her and Aster on my Cornell WWW site.

Robert Ghrist (Ph.D. 1995): My web site is http://www.math.gatech.edu/~ghrist/ I now have an 11 month old daughter! Her name is Annajune Ghrist, and she just started walking. She's a real doll. Hope I get the chance to come see you sometime in the not-too-distant future...

Katy Simonsen (Ph.D.'96) has been an assistant professor in the Statistics Department at Purdue University since 1998. She and her fianc'e, Doug Moore, recently bought a house in West Lafayette, IN, and are planning a March, 2001 wedding.

Rick Wicklin (Ph.D. 1993): I'm loving life in the Research Triangle of NC. I still work at SAS as a software developer. I work on a wide range of activities: graphics, numerics, testing.... Nancy is working for a software company that uses the Internet to provide nurses and other hospital staff with continuing education. My son David is now 15 months old and smiles all the time.

Patty Hough (Ph.D. 1996): I guess the only big event since you last updated alumni info is that I bought a house. It keeps me busy (as if I'm not busy enough at work already!), but I love having my own space. I guess you've probably seen in the news that things are a little crazy at the DOE labs these days, especially with regard to security issues, but the work is still fun. BTW, we're building up quite a little CAM contingent here. Steve Vavasis, Vicki Howle, and Suzanne Shontz are all visiting for the summer. I hope everything is going well at CAM.
