Title: Optimization and Positive Polynomials
Abstract: This talk highlights recent developments in optimization
in connection with constructive procedures for obtaining sum of squares
representations for real positive polynomials.
The interest in finding connections between positive polynomials
and sums of squares dates back to Hilbert's 17th problem in which
he asked whether a real positive polynomial in several variables must
be a sum of squares of rational functions. For some time scholars
in real algebraic geometry have studied related questions regarding
certificates of positivity. More recently, scholars in optimization
have recognized a set of connections between modern optimization techniques
and these certificates of positivity. I will discuss some of the current
interesting interactions between these disciplines.
Refreshments at 4:30 in 657 Rhodes Hall.
