"Proposed New Graduate Minor Field in Computational Science and Engineering"

Abstract: We propose the creation of a new graduate minor field in Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). The minor would give computationally oriented PhD students at Cornell the opportunity to deepen their understanding of advanced computation by taking a flexibly chosen set of four courses from a range of departments across campus. Documents that discuss the rationale for the minor, the proposed requirements, and related curriculum issues are available at

http://www.cs.cornell.edu/cv/CSEMinor/Index.htm

After a brief presentation, we hope to solicit comments from students, faculty, and others that will enable us to improve the proposal before it is formally
submitted to the Graduate School for approval.

We believe that the proposed minor will multiply Cornell's great strength in CSE. It will induce new academic connections between the Theory Center and
the research community. It will enable us to identify more effectively CSE curriculum gaps and CSE faculty hiring needs.

If you have suggestions or concerns but are unable to attend this "colloquium", then please contact Charlie Van Loan, cv@cs.cornell.edu.

Refreshments at 4:30 in 657 Rhodes Hall.
