Timetable for Ph.D. Students

Year 1
Fall: You'll be assigned a temporary advisor. Choose your first-semester courses after meeting with your temporary adviser. Later in the semester, after you get settled in, start thinking about potential thesis advisers.

Spring: Ideally, this is when you should select your Committee Chair (thesis adviser). Submit Special Committee Selection Form.

Year 2
Fall: Select your Committee Chair (if you have not already done so). Select the rest of your Special Committee, with the help of your committee chair. Begin exploring research topics for the coming Spring and/or Summer. Submit Special Committee Selection Form with additions.

Spring: Research should now be underway.

Year 3
Spring or Summer(must be before Semester 7 begins): Take A-Exam and submit Schedule of Exam Form to Grad School 7 calendar days ahead of exam. After exam, submit Results of Exam Form within 3 days; be sure appropriate box is checked by committee if M.S. degree desired.

Year 4
Continue research under supervision of thesis advisor and special committee.

Year 5
Take B-Exam (thesis defense). Submit Schedule of Exam Form to Grad School 7 calendar days ahead of exam.

NOTE: Copies of all forms must be submitted to Dolores Pendell, 614 Rhodes Hall, before submitting to Grad School.
