Outreach

Abra Brisbin developed and taught curriculum on "Math and Gene-Finding" for two classes of students at Ithaca High School in Spring 2008 through the Cornell Grad School Student Outreach Program. Abra also worked as a TA at the George Washington Summer Program for Women in Math, which encourages undergraduate women math majors to attend grad school.

Before entering the CAM Ph.D. program at Cornell, Tim Novikoff was a math teacher at Stuyvesant High School and was a NYC Math Team Coach. After moving to Cornell, Ithaca High School recruited him to start a team at IHS.  Tim was successful in getting the team started and then once a week, he taught problem-solving techniques and prepared the students for the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), the American Invitational Math Exam (AIME) and the on-site New York State Math League (NYSML) competition. Topics covered included: Advanced Euclidian Geometry (Euler Line, etc.), Combinatorics (Path Counting, etc.), Graph Theory (V-E+f=2-2G, etc.) and other topics not covered in the general math curriculum.  Tim guided the team through the logistics of signing up for competitions, started and maintained a team website  (a Google Group) and in April  accompanied the team to NYSML (along with some parents of team members and the teachers who administer the team at IHS). It was a huge success. This picture shows the diverse IHS team.

Several CAM students have participated in Math Explorer's Club at the Ithaca High School in the last few years. Some information on this can be found here.

Each year CAM students participate in Expanding Your Horizons.
